Eat With the Indian Seasons: A Produce Calendar

The strawberry available in every season is a small engineering miracle and usually a disappointment. Produce grown in its natural window — picked ripe, sold close to harvest — beats the cold-stored, long-hauled version on flavour, price, and nutrient density. India's climate gives us three broad growing seasons, and shopping with them is the easiest upgrade to your basket.

Why seasonal wins on nutrition

Vitamin C and many antioxidants degrade with time and storage. A spinach bunch loses a large share of its vitamin C within days of harvest, faster when warm. Seasonal, local produce simply spends less time between field and plate — so more of the nutrition survives to your kitchen.

Seasonal also means in surplus, which means cheaper. You eat better and spend less. That's a rare combination.

A rough Indian calendar

Winter (Nov–Feb) — the golden season

  • Vegetables: carrots, cauliflower, peas, spinach, methi, mustard greens, beetroot, radish.
  • Fruits: oranges, guava, custard apple, amla, strawberries.

This is peak leafy-green season. It's the cheapest, best time to build meals around greens.

Summer (Mar–Jun) — hydration and heat

  • Vegetables: bottle gourd, ridge gourd, cucumber, okra, tinda.
  • Fruits: mango, watermelon, muskmelon, litchi, jamun.

The gourds and melons are water-dense for a reason — they're what the body wants in the heat.

Monsoon (Jul–Oct) — cook it well

  • Vegetables: corn, tinda, karela, cluster beans, colocasia.
  • Fruits: pear, plum, pomegranate, jamun.

Wash monsoon greens thoroughly; humidity means more surface contamination. Cooked vegetables are the safer bet this season.

Putting it to use

You don't need to memorise this. Two habits do the work:

  1. Let price be your signal. When something is suddenly abundant and cheap, it's in season — buy it.
  2. Plan the week around 2–3 seasonal stars. Our meal planner will do this for you, but even by hand, picking the season's best produce first and building meals around it is how the whole basket gets fresher and cheaper.

Eat the season. Your palate and your wallet will agree.
